"Zeldathon" Raises $1 Million in Total Donations for Charity

When it comes to Nintendo's popular franchise The Legend of Zelda, people tend to play only the smash hits: Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, A Link to the Past, etc. However, one Twitch streamer, SuperMCGamer (and his friends), play through every entry in the franchise in his semi-annual charity marathon "Zeldathon." Fifteen Zeldathons have occurred over the past seven years, with each new event gaining more viewers and dollars for various charities. The most recent edition, "Zeldathon Recovery" has already earned over $122,000 by itself, including a $25,000 donation from Five Nights at Freddy's creator Scott Cawthon.

While playing The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, Zeldathon neared one million total dollars raised. The stream's chat became excited, with exhortations to donate the less than $300 needed to reach the goal. Finally - as with every donation - Link walked across the screen to open a chest. Inside (symbolically) was viewer DarkDecay's $300 donation, and the chat went wild. It seemed as though every Zeldathon had been leading up to this moment. In contrast, the reaction on set was calmer than I expected, yet grateful. It was, after all, close to midnight.

However, this doesn't mean that the stream is over. Broadcasting 24/7 for almost a week, the nonstop Zeldathon Recovery still aims to raise a total of $200,000 for the charity Direct Relief. It's a lot of fun with several events such as a mock presidential race, frequent "couch parties," and special sounds when certain amounts (e.g. $33.33, $12, $69.69) are donated. You can watch on either MCGamer's Twitch stream, Twitch.tv/SuperMCGamer, or the official Zeldathon website zeldathon.net. If you'd like to donate, click here. The Zeldathon crew will read your comments on stream, and you can help Zeldathon on its way to its next million.
